Science Adventure Center
Castle Hall
Castle Hall is a 4-story building with extensive lab
facilities.  Due to the design of the building, it has
intensive air conditioning requirements.   A heat
recovery system controls humidity in certain areas
of the building, as well as providing hot water to the
necessary plumbing fixtures.  We designed the
"elephant trunk" vent tubes to solve the problem of
constant chemical use which can cause damages to
the interior of the building.  Close coordination with
the client was required; because the unique building
design with aesthetics was a primary concern.
With over 16,000 sq. ft. of exhibits, the Science
Adventure Center provides an interactive  learning
experience.  The exhibits explore the ocean, wind
and volcano activity that created the islands.  Notkin
Hawaii provided design services including air
conditioning, plumbing and fire protection systems.

Bishop Museum Science Adventure Center won the
AIA Award of Excellence, submitted by CDS
International in collaboration with Zimmer Gunsul
Frasca Partnership, LLP, the Architects.
The Pu'u 'O'o Volcano is a unique feature within the
center.  It is a three-story walk-in volcano named
after the current cinder eruption on Kilauea.  With
lava demonstrations and realistic eruptions, Pu'u
'O'o will provide you an explosive experience.
